About comprehensive assessments

The Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) offers services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths Assessment (CANS) and the Coordinated Assessment System (CAS) are required assessments. New York State uses a person-centered approach to assess the unique health and support needs of people with developmental disabilities.

Everyone who is eligible for OPWDD services needs to complete a CANS or CAS. The assessment is used to make sure services match a person’s needs and interests.

What is CANS

  • The CANS assessment is required for children and adolescents ages 17 and younger.
  • OPWDD uses the CANS as the person-centered, consensus-based functional needs assessment.
  • The CANS is designed to give a profile of the specific current needs and strengths of the child or adolescent and caregivers.
  • The CANS provides important information to the child’s or adolescent’s Care Manager or those responsible for maintaining the care plan.

What is CAS

  • The CAS assessment is required for adults ages 18 and older.
  • OPWDD uses the CAS to learn about the support and care a person needs.
